The French Republic is administratively organised into regions and departments. Before the territorial reform, metropolitan France was divided into 22 regions, together with 5 overseas regions. Since 2016, metropolitan France has been structured into 13 regions, while the number of departments has remained at 101.
The chronoways of France, and more broadly of French-speaking territories, stand out for the remarkable variety of dates they commemorate. Many refer to the end of major modern conflicts, such as 11 November 1918, 8 May 1945, or 19 March 1962. Other landmark dates in French history are also widely represented, including 14 July 1789, 4 September 1870, and 18 June 1940.
Commemorations related to the Second World War are especially frequent, both those recalling tragic events and those marking the liberation of towns and cities. This variety makes France the country with the greatest number of different commemorated dates among those currently recorded in the project.
