1914. 1st World War: massacre hundreds of innocent victims.

On August 23, 1914 is one of the blackest pages in the history of Dinant. During the invasion of Belgium, the Germans shot 674 innocent victims in Dinant August 23, 1914. They used the excuse that there were snipers in the population.
The plate of August 23, recalls that a few yards away, on the Place de L'Abbaye (Leffe), 43 residents of the Faubourg de Leffe who had taken refuge in the abbey, are brought before a firing squad.
Mr. Remy Himmer, director of the Manufacture of fabrics Leffe, Vice-Consul of the Republic of Argentina, will be slaughtered around 6:00 in the evening with many workers.
